Frequently Asked Questions

Solar water heating systems are classified based on the type of solar collector used:
  1. Evacuated Glass Tube (ETC) Type
  2. Flat Plate Collector (FPC) Type
Flat Plate Collector (FPC) Type Solar Water Heating System
  • In an FPC system, the fins are made of copper tubes with selective Nickel Chrome plating, which are ultrasonically welded to copper tubes.
  • These fins are covered with toughened glass and enclosed in an insulated box with an aluminum frame.
  • The water temperature in this system can reach up to 60-65°C.
Evacuated Tube Collector (ETC) Type Solar Water Heating System
  • Evacuated tubes act as the absorbers in a solar water heating system.
  • They absorb solar energy and convert it into heat for water heating.
  • Each evacuated tube consists of two borosilicate glass tubes.
  • The outer tube is transparent, allowing light rays to pass through with minimal reflection.
  • The inner tube is coated with a special selective coating (Al-N/Al) that ensures high solar radiation absorption and minimal reflection.

The capacity of a solar water heating system is defined in liters per day (LPD).

  • 125 LPD Flat Plate Collector (FPC) requires approximately 3 sq. meters of shadow-free area.
  • 100 LPD Evacuated Tube Collector (ETC) requires approximately 1.5 sq. meters of shadow-free area.
  • Approximately 25 liters of hot water per person per day is considered while sizing a solar water heating system.
  • For a family of 4 persons with one bathroom, the required capacity is:
    25 liters × 4 persons = 100 liters per day.

Solar water heating systems can be used for:

  1. Domestic (Residential) purposes
  2. Commercial applications (Hotels, Hospitals, Laundries, etc.)
  3. Industrial applications

Soft water with a hardness level below 150 PPM is recommended

  • If hard water is used, scale deposition will occur inside tubes and solar collectors over time.
  • This scale can be removed by descaling with acid periodically.
  • Domestic solar water heating systems do not require significant maintenance.
  • Monthly cleaning of solar collectors improves system efficiency.
  • The annual maintenance cost varies from ₹5 per liter to ₹10 per liter, depending on the system’s capacity and type.

A 100 LPD solar water heating system can prevent the emission of 1.5 tons of CO₂ per year, which is equivalent to planting around 40 trees annually

  • A 100 LPD solar water heating system can save approximately 1,500 units of electricity per year (assuming 300 working days, excluding 65 rainy or cloudy days).
  • At an electricity rate of ₹10 per unit, the annual savings would be ₹10,000.
  • The payback period for:
    • 125 LPD FPC type is around 2 years.
    • 100 LPD ETC type is around 1.5 years.
  • The solar tank is insulated to store hot water for 1-2 days.
  • In case of prolonged cloudy or rainy weather, an electrical heater can be installed in the solar tank to ensure a continuous hot water supply.
